San Diego Zoo Pandas
A variety of cuddly creatures abound at the Panda Trek exhibit at the San Diego Zoo near the Best Western Seven Seas Hotel, where kids stay free in October. Residing in bamboo forests, the pandas have been favorites since 1996 when two adult pandas and their kids came over from China. The Giant Panda Research Station is home to giant pandas and a red panda, which is actually related to raccoons, even though they love eating bamboo. The area features very nice accommodations, extra vegetation, and cool climbing structures. In addition, there are gold-colored takins, also from China, that are a cross between a goat and an antelope.

The newest addition, is the sixth panda cub born at the San Diego Zoo. The offspring of Bai Yun was born on July 29, 2012 and doesn’t have a name yet as the Chinese traditionally wait 100 days before giving a name to newborns. A contest was held to name the baby panda, which allowed the public to make submissions. The panda cub weighs in at four pounds and is almost a foot and a half long. One of the unique features of a new panda is that it doesn’t begin opening its eyes until it is about 50 days old. Amazingly, the eye-opening process can take as long as three weeks.
