The newest addition, is the sixth panda cub born at the San Diego Zoo. The offspring of Bai Yun was born on July 29, 2012 and doesn’t have a name yet as the Chinese traditionally wait 100 days before giving a name to newborns. A contest was held to name the baby panda, which allowed the public to make submissions. The panda cub weighs in at four pounds and is almost a foot and a half long. One of the unique features of a new panda is that it doesn’t begin opening its eyes until it is about 50 days old. Amazingly, the eye-opening process can take as long as three weeks.
