Things to Do in San Diego - Cabrillo National Monument & Festival

On September 28, 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo became the first European to set his sights on California and land on the West Coast of America. His historic landing is commemorated by the Cabrillo National Monument, which sits high above the ocean on the scenic hillsides of Point Loma. From here, you can enjoy a stunning view of the entire area, even across to Mexico on a clear day. Cabrillo's landing is re-enacted on October 1 at the Cabrillo Festival, a colorful celebration of the area's history and heritage. During the event, you can enjoy folklore performances, dramatic music, dancing, and educational activities. Learn about the traditions of the Native American, Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish cultures, and step back in time to the Age of Exploration. The Cabrillo Festival takes place from 11 am to 4 pm on October 1, however the Cabrillo National Monument is open from 9 am to 5 pm seven days per week.
